About
I am a Brighton based designer who loves all things colourful and environmentally friendly. You can find my stall on Upper Gardner Street Market every Saturday (weather permitting), or purchase products though my website.
DOT KNITS specialize in making handcrafted items with affordable price tags. I ensure that all products are limited edition with 1-10 pieces available in each colour so that my customers express their individuality. I pride myself in the use of quality materials, luxury craftsmanship and strong ethics.
History
I have started this business in homage to my late great-nanny and knitting teacher Dot. I first started knitting at a very young age on visits to Dot's house, and what began as an excuse to keep her company for a few hours a week soon turned in to a shared love and full blown obsession with all things knitted. Armed with my nanny’s years of knitting knowledge and proof of the happiness you can spread through the craft, I went on to complete a first-class (hons) BA at London College of Fashion, in Fashion Knitwear. You will find that Dot lives on throughout the business, most noticeably the name and logo (a nod to her love of crosswords) but also in the designs themselves; I have spent time reviving some of the patterns and designs that she created in her golden years and her knitting machine takes pride of place in my studio, used to create many of the lovely items you see for sale. I hope my designs can enrich peoples lives as much as Dot enriched mine.

Ethics
Dot Knits cares about it's impact on the environment, below are some of the policies I have implemented and ways in which I try to reduce Dot Knits impact on the environment.
-
No plastic postage! All product packaging is 100% recyclable.
- All products are created in house by me in my UK studio.
-
I am 100% Transparent about my supply chain and use of materials.
-
You will never find the use of non-ethical materials such as fur, pure silk and some types of angora where and animal has been harmed in the production process. All my merinos and wools come from certified farmers and companies who pride themselves in having a good knowledge of their supply chain.
-
Where possible I try to use only Organic Cotton (unless recycled or purchased as deadstock).
-
When buying new yarns I ensure they are either organic or recycled fibres. The rest of my yarn comes from sellers specializing in waste cones from the fashion industry, leftovers from local designers or even brought from local charity shops!
- No wastage! I ensure that each yarn is utilized to its full potential and even the very small off cuts are stored and used as stuffing or embroidery threads.
-
No harsh chemicals are used in the washing or production process of any of my pieces.
